FOR A CLEANER, MORE AFFORDABLE PUEBLO AND COLORADO
No more excuses Xcel—it’s time to embrace clean, renewable energy
Action Alert - Upcoming Public Comment Hearings - Your Voice is Needed!
The PUC has scheduled four public comment hearings in the Xcel JTS proceeding: in-person hearings in Pueblo (April 17) and Hayden (May 2), and two virtual hearings, on April 28 and June 5. Please plan on attending one of these to give the PUC your views on Xcel’s expansion plans and the need for 100% renewable energy. More information on the CleanUpXcel calendar.
A toolkit is available to help you craft your statement (also available in Spanish).
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Xcel Energy, Colorado's largest utility, is on track to decommission and replace the Comanche 3 (C3) coal plant in Pueblo—the state's single largest climate pollution source—by 2031. While the utility’s plans include significant investments in renewable energy like wind and solar, it also calls for new fossil gas generation. Additionally, the plan leaves the door open to expensive and potentially harmful "false solutions" such as nuclear power and carbon capture technology, which pose risks to both public health and the environment.
At the heart of this issue is the city of Pueblo, which has long suffered from industrial pollution and environmental injustice. Pueblo has borne the brunt of the coal plant's noxious pollution, while others in wealthier parts of Colorado get the power. It is time to stop making Pueblo a sacrifice zone and fight for clean, renewable energy and a just transition for workers.

WHAT WE’RE FIGHTING FOR:
Our coalition demands that Xcel Energy commit to replacing the dirty energy produced by the Pueblo coal plant with clean wind and solar energy and effective battery storage. These energy sources are more affordable, sustainable, and beneficial for public health, economic development, and environmental protection.
With your help, we can urge, we urge the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to approve an energy plan that prioritizes these renewable energy options and rejects dangerous, untested technologies and harmful fossil fuels that will further cause injustice in the Pueblo community.
